Brock Lesnar the UFC champ?

In Fighters on November 17, 2008 at 6:23 am

Okay, here is one that really surprised me. Randy Couture was defeated by former WWE wrestler Brock Lesnar in a less than spectacular fight at UFC 91 in the MGM Grand Garden Arena Saturday night.

In only his fourth MMA fight, Lesnar defeated one of the most decorated fighters in Hall of Famer Randy Couture in the second round. In fact, he made it look pretty easy. Randy was never really in the bout. He tried to muscle Lesnar and push him into the cage and just lay on him like he did with Tim Sylvia.

His game plan I guess was to tire Lesnar out when the fight got into the later rounds. It would never make it that far. Lesnar scored a takedown in the first as very little significant action occurred.

The second round was all Lesnar as he stunned Couture with an elbow and later dropped him with a looping punch to the temple. To me, it looked like a glancing blow but Randy went down like a sack of over aged potatoes. Lesnar jumped on top and pounded him out with some silly looking hammer fists that you would be more likely to see at your little sister’s slumber party than at an MMA.

My question for all you readers is this, do you think Brock Lesnar is good for the sport? A heavyweight champ after only 4 MMA fights. Should he even had a title shot at all? Frank Mir has got to be salivating as he prepares for his upcoming bout. Start working on your heel hooks and basic jiu-jitsu moves Frank, because it is likely that Brock will fall prey to one of those again…

Josh Neer a special guest referee?

In Fighters, Uncategorized on November 12, 2008 at 10:01 am

Okay, it is simply a rumor at this point, but word on the street is that Des Moines native and UFC veteran Josh “The Dentist” Neer may drop by sometime and act as a special guest ref for a Des Moines MMA Fight Night.

You may have been watching recently as Josh appeared on Spike TV for UFC Unleashed and fought rising star Nate Diaz. If you were watching closely early in the telecast, you might have noticed who was in Josh’s corner for the fight, our very own Anthony “A-Train” Porcelli.

Josh fought an AWESOME fight and Nate gave him his props at the end of the fight. I will mangle the exact quote but he said of Josh, “the kid knows how to fight!”
Anthony was in Josh’s corner for that fight. Who knows, you might see Josh pop up at one of these events! Stay tuned…

What is considered an Amateur Fighter?

In Rules on November 12, 2008 at 9:26 am

This is a great question that I hope to answer here clearly.

In order to be considered an “amateur” fighter by the Iowa Athletic Commission, a fighter can’t be PAID to fight.

Also, the distinction is made whether or not the majority of income that the fighter makes is from fighting. Many different rule changes exist to differentiate between pro status and amatuer status. I will hit the main ones in following posts.

Make sure you keep an eye on the RULES category as we will explain all sorts of rules details and that is where our release forms are found.

Simply put, an amateur fighter is one that isn’t paid and doesn’t fight for a living. Those are the kind that we feature in our fight nights.

Hope that helps!

It’s On!

The date is set, the venue is booked…

Soon the cage doors will be shut and locked…and history will be made!

It has been a long time in coming, but the Des Moines MMA Fight Night is ON!

Friday, December 5th at the 7 Flags Event Center in Clive is the place. You know, I don’t even know where West Des Moines stops and Clive starts, but I do know where the place for hot amatuer mixed martial arts action will be.

We provide a series for Midwest amatuers to get their feet wet in the fight game. The action will be wild, raw and unpredicatble. There is no telling what you might see. We will feature exhibition matches from well know fighters as well and tickets are reasonable.

Join us on the journey! Des Moines MMA Fight Night…

IT’S ON!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
